May 13,1997 F-4J Phantom II The F-4J Phantom was originally designed as a shipboard interceptor, but the brutal airwar in Southeast Asia transformed the F-4 into a versatile com-bat aircraft capable of handling a wide range of missions. Not only did the F-4J prove itself to be an excellent all-weather interceptor, but it served admir- ably as a fighter-bomber as well. The F-4J was a further devlopment of the F-4B,which first flew in 1956,and approximately 520 aircraft of this series were built. While keeping this role the F-4J was also configured for ground attack roles. The F-4J was equipped with it's signature slotted stabilators and drooped ailerons plus the powerful General Electric J-79 Turbojet engine capable of making nearly 18,000 lbs. of thrust. The F-4J was a heavy aircraft weighing in at almost 30 tons!Despite this heavy weight the F-4J could achieve a startling top speed of nearly 1500 mph. The aircraft had crew of two, pilot and RIO (Radar Intercept Officer). The F-4J also has the distinction of being one of the few modern aircraft to be used by not only the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marines but the U.S. Air Force as well. The model was created in Lightwave 5.0 and all markings are stenciled in as opposed to using image maps.
